September is National Fall Prevention Month
Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury among older adluts?
Each September, National Fall Prevention Month reminds us of the importance of taking steps—literally and figuratively—to reduce risks and stay safe at home and in the community.
As we age, factors like vision changes, medications, or weaker balance can increase the chance of a fall. The good news? Most falls are preventable with a little preparation and awareness.
Here are a few simple tips to stay steady:
- Keep pathways clear. Remove loose rugs, cords, and clutter from walkways.
- Light it up. Install nightlights in hallways, bathrooms, and bedrooms.
- Bathroom safety - install grab bars near toilets and inside your showers/bathtub.
- Stay active. Gentle exercises like walking, yoga, or tai chi can strengthen muscles and improve balance.
- Check your footwear. Supportive, non-slip shoes can make a big difference.
- Review medications. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if any prescriptions may affect balance or coordination.
National Fall Prevention Month is a great reminder to look around your home, check in with loved ones, and make small changes that can prevent big accidents. With a little planning, you can stay independent, confident, and on your feet.
